Listed as late 19th/early twentieth century Mary Gregory vases at a recent auction. They look reasonably right with applied layers in the image as well as wear underneath and loss of gilding on the rim etc that seem to indicate some age. Shame about the large chips to the rim mainly on the boy vase. What do you think? Real or repro, 1890s or 1920s or 1980s?

They look fine for late 19th to me.

That makes me feel a little more comfortable as I've been bitten by Mary Gregory stuff before so I'm always very cautious with them.

The use of color would make them later in the period.

Can I now grumble about the use of the term Mary Gregory? ;)

    They're rather nice, those.

Why grumble, the boy is Gregory, the girl, Mary. Or so I've been told.

Owned has the goods, the last link is all that is needed. Joan Kaiser, in a club talk, mentioned that subsequent to Miss Gregory's passing, a box of base balls and others was found in her attic. The suggestion was that perhaps she didn't really like children, keeping their toys that fell in her yard.

The article fails to note how Mary Gregory's name came to be associated with the particular type of glassware attributed to her. Perhaps that fell outside the scope of their study.

Blame an overenthusiastic (but now unknown) antique dealer, when anything good must have come from Boston & Sandwich, found out that Mary Gregory had painted at B & S, and made up a good story.
