Hi guys I’m a professional magician and also interested in ‘new thought.’ I love to collect old books on magic tricks such as Hoffman etc.

I also love books on metaphysics and be thought. Authors such as Neville Goddard. Etc.

I gave one of Hoffman's books to my physician, who I knew would be fascinated & also named Hoffman. Welcome, Ali.

For the many oldsters here, what, exactly, is 'new thought'? Are we launching into metaphysics?

Hi Ali, and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS!!:):)

Googling it sent me to Wikipedia.....a small very partial bit suggests "The history of New Thought started in the 1830s, with roots in the United States and England. As a spiritual movement with roots in metaphysical beliefs, New Thought has helped guide a variety of social changes throughout the 19th, 20th, and into the 21st centuries."

    Welcome to the forum, Ali.

It is actually a few years older than the oldsters here.;) Since Ali hasn't returned yet, an attempt at explaining it from this old theologian:
It is one of the many late 19th century movements towards more spiritual content and way of viewing the world. Metaphysics is part of it, but it encompasses more:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Thought

It is actually a bit like an American version of the tradition of my background, Kejawen, the Javanese/Madurese form of living with and according to spirituality and cosmic order.

Does Annie Besant come into this? Or Swedenborg?

Annie Besant was Theosophy, wasn't she? Roughly the same period as New Thought. Swedenborg was much earlier, but he certainly influenced those later schools.

    Edit:
Kejawen is a few thousand years older,;) but it is synchretic, so it absorbs elements from later spiritualities and schools of thought.

Welcome, Ali. This forum is a great place to learn. I recently purchased a storage unit that was filled with a collection of vintage magic books and tricks. Perhaps I have something you're searching for.

My first sale on eBay was a signed book by Houdini that sold for over $1,000. A book that I purchased at a yard sale for .25.....

I can't remember if the book sold for $1200, or $1400, but it put me in business on eBay.
