I have a stunning teapot that is marked with Summer Rose inside a cartouche. I'm trying to determine the manufacturer. I know it's a longshot but any help would be appreciated. I've googled like crazy and did find a creamer that was similar on Pinterest produced by Clews but different enough to not be the producer of my pattern. The Clews creamer was from eBay but I couldn't find it on eBay or on Terapeak. The creamer I saw had a banner like decoration running throughout the pattern. This teapot doesn't. I realize this beauty has a lot of damage but I just cant make myself throw it away. The handle, spout and finial(replaced with a wood one) are missing along with numerous chips. Also, does the incised lines mean it's a second? I posted this on The Transferware Collector's Club website message board a couple days ago with no response. I've checked Lovers of Blue & White website with no luck. I know that someone would love to tackle this as a repair project. It is such a beauty. I've had one response on the pgp board saying they thought that it may Clews and that the scratch marks didn't indicate a second.

According to Coysh & Henrywood's The Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery 1780-1880, volume I, p. 352. the pattern was done by James & Ralph Clews. Direct quote:

    "Summer Rose"
James & Ralph Clews. A pattern title recorded on a teapot decorated with a reserve containing two wild roses in a vase. Ill: Atterbury p. 205."

Their source of Atterbury is for:
"Atterbury, P., (Ed), English Pottery and Porcelain, London 1980."

A couple of website quoting Clews as maker:

Hi Susan! Hope all is well with you. You've helped me over the years with oil lamp ID's. Thanks for the info. Wonder why the creamer IDed as Summer Rose shown on Pinterest is different? unless it is miss IDed? The urn is different also. I'll see if I can find it again.

Carl, I saw your posting over on the Transferware Collectors Club site. When first seeing your query, I was going to immediately tell you about that query! Then on 2nd look noted it was probably you.

    >Wonder why the creamer IDed as Summer Rose shown on Pinterest is different?<

Wellll, I haven't a clue other than it was missed IDed??? I don't take much stock in eBay's ID's unless the seller's gives source/proof. Really Coysh & Henrywood is one of the best transferware references out there. I did check Petra William & Weber's 3 volumes of Staffordshire Romantic Transfer Patterns: Cup Plates and Early Victorian China. Summer Rose isn't in any of their work.

Nowww the Lovers of Blue and White website lists a "Summer Rose" pattern for Booth. That "Summer Rose" isn't anything like yours.

Here is a cup and saucer on eBay in the Summer Rose pattern that looks like yours through the marking on the bottom is different:

Carl is yours really a teapot? It looks more like a sugar box. Looks like this sugar by Clews:

Here are Clews' "Summer Rose" on WorthPoint. There is that creamer and a sugar shaped like yours:

Thanks for finding the cup & saucer Susan. When we got this at auction a while back we thought it was a sugar box but after a peroxide bath all of the putty started coming off. I saw the one on Blue & white site in my research.
