I've today taken receipt of a pair of small Chinese plates I recently purchased, each of which bear a blue hand painted mark. I've seen similar marks on Celadon pieces online, but there seem to be differences of opinion as to the origin and probable age of such pieces, possibly because they are not your 'usual' type of reign mark.

I'd be really grateful to hear the views of any experts wishing to comment.

    Thanks !!!!

These hastily drawn marks are typical on these rose canton plates, these will date c1860-80

I think they’re gorgeous too. It is seldom the birds are drawn so big. The mark is typical and normally illegible. Perhaps Jiaqing in this case?

Is this what you mean, Ken?

    Jiaqing Nian Zhi, Da Qing

Mark referring to the Qing dynasty Jiaqing period 1796-1820 but is later. During the 1960s to 70s this was a common mark on porelain made in China but decorated in Macao or Hong Kong.
[IMG] 760. Mark: Da Qing Jiaqing Nian Zhi - "Great Qing Jiaqing period (1796-1820) made". Inside the neck a sticker saying, Made in Hong Kong. Tentative date c. 1960-70s. Beside that the sticker indicates Hong Kong, this mark seems to be uniquely connected to Macau. See also "Macau Style" marks.

Sorry I replied wrongly and don’t know how to delete it My Chinese reading friend thinks it’s not a Jiaqing mark, but no doubt it is old... and really beautiful! You can google “celadon rose canton” to find out more.
