I found this while Metal Detecting next to a broken down bridge built in the late 1700s, while I know it is not that old (probably made in the mid 1900s) I do not know exactly when It was made. I have spent some time cleaning it up using Electrolysis. Does anyone know when it was made?

Sears used that brand name up to 1962. Probably from the '50s.

I tried Googling for an online J.C. Higgins catalog, for an answer to your question. I haven't yet found one but I laughed out loud when I read someone's comment about J.C. Higgins bicycles: "I think it is interesting to note that J.C. Higgins bikes were the only bikes in the school bike rack that did not require a lock. No one would steal them for fear of the humiliation of being seen riding one."

    I concur with Terry. 1950's-60's.

I too concur with Terry. I looked up Sears and Higgins and found that J.C. Higgins, Sears sporting brand, was used from 1908 to 1962 when they changed their sporting brand to Ted Williams. J.C. Higgins was named after a Sears employee, John Higgins, that immigrated from Ireland and started working for Sears in 1893 and retired 30. Again a little bit of useless trivia.
