I did post these on another site but didn't get much response...the brooch is big, approx 5 cms by 5 and a half.
It's on porcelain...I louped and couldn't see dots but it's probably transfer, isn't it? It says ROLLED near the hinge, so it's not solid.

I thought this bracelet may be jet but the other site said no...does anyone have any idea what it could be? It leaves a brownish mark on tiles.

Rolled gold is a type of plating done in the 1800s to early 1900s. Thicker than today's plating.

Rolled gold is still used here. It's not strictly plating, it is literally bonding gold onto a base substrate using heat. So, it's a physical process as opposed to plating.

That's interesting, I didn't know heat was used ... so much to learn!!

The image is printed on. If I were going to take a wild guess I'd say 1910s or so on the pin. The bracelet may be older. Someone replaced the elastic at least once, and it looks like it's been through the wars.

Could be, with some kind of black Japanning maybe (looks like lacquer).

On of 'em. Vulcanite is even better at it; that's natural rubber.

The porcelain miniature is some version of Jupiter in the Guise of Diana Seducing Callisto.

Wondering if the bracelet might be bois durci?

One of the things I considered as well, but I've never seen bois durci crack and flake like that. It has no grain, since it is ground wood mixed with blood, gelatin and egg white.

Victorian MDF! Medium Density Fiberboard, made of wood remnants and a couple of binders. It's used in furniture mostly.
