    Hi Atxmama!

    Welcome to Antiquers..........:cat:

The sideboard looks to be in very nice condition.

I think it's a matter of opinion on whether you would ruin it or not.

In my opinion, you would be, but I'm sure there are others here who would disagree.

It's a lot more difficult to remove paint, than it is to paint.....just saying.............:)

Normally Im in the "do what you want camp" but this is far too beautiful to paint ! All that lovely detail (wich makes it more special than the run of the mill stuff) will be lost .

Let me put it this way. It is an antique and, if you paint it, any value it has as an antique will be lost.

Beautiful quarter-sawn oak, the most beautiful of the oakses.

I'm in with the do not paint.
    The workmanship is very nice.

Value of oak furniture is down right now. Painted furniture is a craze that will pass and then nice wood furniture will be hard to find, driving prices up. That's what happened in the 1970s. So I expect it will happen again at some point.

Normally i am in the PAINT IT camp but, not on this piece. As others have noted, condition is good and the quartered oak looks great. Another point here is, that revival 17th century carving on top rail/apron is very attractive and once painted would be a real pain to remove.

Please don't hurt this sideboard! That's a nice chunk of quarter-sawn oak. I've gotten paint back OFF of quarter-sawn before, and it's a chore. I'd say leave well enough alone unless a piece is damaged.

LOL, yeah, i hear you. With the furniture i collect, my entire world revolves around PAINT! It's in-painted, it's over-painted, the paint is missing ALL TOGETHER!:oops:
It seems most of my life has been dealing with paint on furniture or lack thereof.
