Before I destroy it - Is this a designer tv stand?

Found this today dumped on the side of the road. I have already so much stuff at home so I had to pass it two times before I decided that I do like it much to loose out on it.

I'm very bored with this quarantine and was playing with the thoughts to refurbish it to my own taste..

Maybe I add a table top and turn it into a sideboard or such. Or maybe repaint the base with Joan Miró colors and motifs. I don't know yet... Any ideas or tips what I should do with it :).

But before I do this. I need to know if I will destroy any value of the piece.

Its a good quality and decorative work made in heavy solid wood, around 80kg in weight I guess. So don't think it would be a mass production piece because of its build?

How would you research something like this? Which terms would you use?
I looked everywhere and it has no labels or such. Any ideas somebody?

Could you take a direct photo of the hinges inside the door? Anything written on them?

good point. The hinges are by a german furniture fittings manufacture called Hettich. They also have quarters in the UK where Im based.

Might have been a store display.

Looks 1990s to me. Probably was a bit pricey originally w/German hinges.

Seems like there is a shadow of whatever was sitting on the top. Is that the only damage?

The functionality of it is interesting, might be a clue, too. You've got the hole in the top (I assume for an electrical cord to go down) but then the hole in the back door, for a cord to leave. But if you have the whole heavy thing up against a wall, you can't really use it as storage, so whatever was underneath can't be accessed easily. Was the door just to let the plug go through, or was there some function for that space?

(Also curious how you moved it. 80kg!)

Yes thats the only damages beside a few dings, scratches here and there.
My guesses are that the whole in the top was indeed was for the cables, or maybe a pole were you can attached a tv on? The whole in the back could be used for other electronic cables of other devices? But yeah would not make sense to have a dvd or other when the back is facing to the wall. But than again you would need a hole in the back so that you can open the door.

I dont know what it was used for. The shadow on the top suggest it was used as a tv stand.

I lifted it easy over my head hihi. We have a local guy here with a van who does small delivery for a small fee. He is 6 foot 5 or so and a heavyweight but he was really struggling on his own (I'm 58 so couldnt help. He told me it was heavier than 75kg. Maybe its less, who knows, I'm not gone try it out :)

Some of these things apparently go for north of $1K U.S. when new.

    Beyond that, deponent sayeth not.

I'd say definitely meant for a TV or other electronics too. It seems to be particle board or MDF, and the latter while stable weighs an effing TON. I wouldn't have touched it either - medical 5 kilo weight limit.

I'd not repurpose that. Given the hinges, I think it cost serious dosh. Nice find.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It seems that it has some value, so you may want to keep it as it. If you don't use it as a TV stand, maybe you can put colorful items on it to satisfy your urge to improve it?
