    I got this bedroom chair.I
think if I paint the timber it will bring out the detail of the turned and carved features and probably balance it out a little bit as well in terms of shape because the timber parts will look less thin in comparison to the padding.
Also the front legs are a darker colour stain to the back legs and side and back rails.
Thoughts? I was thinking of a antique white/ cream colour.

I think it's lovely just as it is. Antique Eastlake, but do wait for confirmation from those who know for sure about era.

Beautiful as is, in my opinion. You're lucky to find such a gem.

Circa 1880 transitional between renaissance revival and Eastlake styles. Would be a shame to paint this.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

IMHO, it would be a sin to paint that lovely, well kept chair!!!!

Even the upholstery is attractive and in good condition.

I don't usually paint old furniture unless it's damaged and not of value. I like it as it is but you have to live with it so if you're not concerned about what others like.....

It's so cute with the wheel turned in. Reminds me of a shy schoolgirl. (not a shy schoolgirl but you see what I mean)

IMG_20200830_120505.jpg I am not so concerned about value and doing the right thing for this chair from a preservation point of view as I am about aesthetics.
I speculate that it might look better painted a lighter colour just like these chairs have been painted.

Yes but that is something entirely different. You can't compare those styles, literally.
Yours is really nice, the fabric seems in a wonderful condition (as much as I can see it's a silk brocade?) and the wood seems healthy too. It would be pity to paint it

Have you consider using Howard's restor a finish to even out the color variations. Easy to apply though you will have to be careful in masking off the fabric.
