Featured Beautiful knife trying to identify

Hey folks!

I have this lovely knife that I am trying to ID. I am so bad with this kind of marks. Not sure if it's silver or silver plates or something else.
Marks... I guess you see on the photos. I see ghost and cars and crowns hehe

Length approx. 19 cm.

I agree on plated. I am wondering though whether that "car" is actually a Canadian beaver mark.

 

It's certainly a beaver, but not necessarily Canadian. John Sherwood & Sons of Birmingham used a beaver as a trademark.

 

I suspect a letter opener.....

 

Ha ! Found a basket today with a beaver mark ! Thank god I only paid $2 . Had never seen one,so I was intrigued. Yep,silver plate.

Not to hijack the thread but heres some pics. I thought it so ironic Id never seen a beaver mark until today then I sign on and there one is !

M&S on the basket is Maxfield & Sons of Sheffield who also used a beaver mark. As did William Mammatt & Sons, also of Sheffield. These two together with Sherwoods (mentioned earlier) all used left-facing beavers so the original right-facing one is still unidentified.

The EP mark looks to me like the sterling silver mark for Emile Puirforcat. This knife is called a dessert knife. In my set (Gorham) a similar knife that I found once was an antique Bird Knife. I looked this up because, long ago, at an auction, another bidder pointed out a GORGEOUS large spoon to me marked EP because he knew that I bought pretty silverplate. He was only interested in sterling. I couldn't believe he made that mistake. But I bought the spoon for peanuts and sold it on line to an antique store in New Orleans. Here's one example of the mark I found on line. Puirforcat is in business in France today, but Emile Puiforcat was the founder.

So I guess what I was saying above is don't disregard the EP mark because there are 2 French sterling makers with an EP markers mark who might fool you.

Edit: P.S. I'm still not convinced that this knife is plated. The "Beaver" is facing the wrong direction from what I've seen on line.

This is not a Puiforcat mark, French silver marks would be in a lozenge (diamond) cartouche from 1798 on and would also bear proper French hallmarks. This fruit/dessert knife in the classic 'Albert' pattern, as already said, is English silverplate, pseudo-marks of a currently unidentified manufacturer, dating mid to late 19th century (the 'crown' not used after 1897)

'EP' as a maker's mark can be found on silver from many countries, but this piece bears typical English electroplate marks, and there are numerous French silver maker's marks bearing the initials 'EP', again, if silver, they will also bear hallmarks and from 1798, be in a lozenge.

Not sure I see how the beaver mark can be facing the 'wrong' direction if the manufacturer has not been identified, and there are a lot of English silverplate marks without identification or firm attributions, including this one as silvermakersmarks said:
