I picked this up w/out any kind of research beforehand and price for me (broke enthusiast/collector) was considerable. I’m wondering
it’s authenticity being an artifact and if it is legitimate, what tribal affiliation it is associated with? I have a guess but would like to see if I messed up first....

Are the "cones" on the end if the sheath magnetic? Is it this one? https://allardauctions.hibid.com/lot/13413814/sioux-beaded-sheath/

Dude, for the next time: please select 'show all full image' before posting. Clicking back & forth between thumbnails is annoying. Thanks. :D

I'm thinking most likely African, not Native American....but others have more knowledge than I....we'll see what they have to say.

No offense meant to anyone; I started posting on ebay forums years ago, at a time when I was very discouraged by the number of fakes on ebay...and I just got accustomed to the silly posting ID.

    Sioux Beaded Sheath
    Description
Beautiful sinew sewn and lazy stitch beaded hard rawhide knife sheath with a handmade antique pewter inlaid knife. Very good condition. 16" x 3", knife 11-1/2" Circa: Mid 1900s

I can live with that for the sheath...........the knife is another matter....

People in glass houses shouldn't throw aspersions at other people's names. After all, I believe most of us know what Wtf(dude) stands for.

The "cones" made from the metal lids of snuff cans, lazy stitch for the bead work that most anyone can do.Rawhide and sinew easily available, knife and handle unknown maker with pewter inlay is fairly easy to make. With no known history it could have been made by hobbyist/students and sold at the local fur trade rendezvous.

...ah, didn't think I was throwing stones/aspirations. I'm not here to troll or offend, at all. I don't even think Steve (All Fakes) took it that way.....I was just commenting the irony of his comment to his name, which by his own admission (I think) was a bit of a jab to that effect....and I am alright with that, but did give recognition. Apologies to any and all that is offended to my (as far as Im concerned) not throwing stones comment. I myself, don't try to feel that entitled.

no apologies needed here.....hope my response didn't make you feel that way, if it did...my bad, apologies. Just wanted to acknowledge the post and actually thought your comment was a barb in good fun, was my train of thought. I'm not here to offend anyone, I have an armchair antique-rs amount of knowledge and looking to get a better grasp of knowledge and being a offensive turd isn't conducive with learning, long or short term. So again apologies if you or anyone took it so. I'm good with your comment :)

This is exactly the reasoning for my post.....do you have an answer to my question (how can I authenticate) or just other ways it could be a fake?

the magnetic question....I know you said ..."snuff lids", etc. but how does magnetic play into if it is or isn't? Are magnetic cones assumed fake? I have a burden basket with magnetic cones that was understood to be authentic.

The sheath is real, the beads are real, the sinew is real, etc.,but there is no way anyone can say that it was made by a Native American. The cones were magnetic,so they were not silver. The knife could have come from anywhere.

I have a number of Native American made items which came from a "blanket swap",no paper work,no names of the makers, just a nod of the head and a hand shake to finalize the barter.

Cones were originally made from rolled metal snuff can lids,no idea when the practice started or ended.. https://wanderingbull.com/shop/craft-supplies/metal/adult-jingle-cones-our-own/
