Beaded African Mask

    Very grateful for any information that anybody may have.

    Welcome Calum, would you please edit your post to make your pictures "full size" - I cannot see how the chin is attached to the, is that a coconut?

    These round masks have become popular in the decorator market, and seem to be made in several places in west Africa (Ghana, Gabon), and by the Luba (Baluba) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They may be derived from a traditional Luba form:

    Thank you, Calum, they are much easier to see now, without struggling to flip back and forth. Could you please tell me how the "chin" is attached? Is it a piece of coconut pegged through the bottom of the mask? Or just glued to the exterior?

    Yours is rather nice for a souvenir, but I do think it's a souvie.

    Thanks a lot Antidiem, the chin seems to be carved from the same piece of wood as the face
