    I found this old bayonet and was wondering about the markings on it. Thanks! 20170107_123943-1280x481.jpg 20170107_123226-1200x2689.jpg 20170107_123253-1200x1719.jpg 20170107_123626-1200x1536.jpg

    The very small mark looks like the BSA trademark. (Birmingham Small Arms).

    I think the bayonet is for an Enfield rifle ablut WWI period.

    I'd have expected to see an 'R' with that G.

    Thank you for posting this Chris.....it led me to find that my bayonet is a 1942 Lithgow ,Australian pattern 1907 made in the Slazenger factory.

    And, from the date these were used, it wasn't my fathers. Which is weird because I distinctly remember him telling me that it was his.

    Additional question. Are bayonets such as this offset by design or is it bent? Picture is looking down the blade toward the tip. 20170107_171553-1200x3175.jpg

    yup, someone sat on it !

    I bought a small Buck 2 blade pocket knife once...& showed the seller that the large blade was bent at an angle.....& got a discount.

    Cept...the blade is made that way to fit in next to the smaller blade....

    Ohhh, I'm such a scamp !! :p:p;)

    I was able to figure out it is a pattern 1856 bar on barrel. But the marks are still stumping me, the capital G, small c, and especially those strange littIe punched dots. can't find examples anywhere. I did however discover that to determine if it is a model 1856 take a standard nickel and place it in the muzzle ring. It will fit inside almost perfectly. The outside diameter of the nickel and the inside diameter of the muzzle ring are practically identical. Later model rifles had smaller diameter muzzles.

    Hummmm....

    58.....Blade length is about 23" and muzzle ring diameter is ~7/8" (internal).

    56.....Blade length is about 23" and muzzle ring diameter is ~7/8" (internal).

    The main difference between the the Pattern 1858 and the 1856 is: the 1856 attaches to a bar (or lug) on the barrel and has a muzzle ring in which the inner diameter is in line with the tang of the blade;
    ..the 1858 attaches to a bar on a barrel-band and has a muzzle ring in which the inner diameter stands off about 1/8" above the blade tang (about 1/4" above the blade back edge).

    I stand corrected and good to know. But, any info yet on the markings? That's the parts that's driving me crazy.
