I would think East Africa, rather than West Africa. She looks Maasai, but made in a more Makonde style. With all those smaller figures it is reminiscent of Makonde Ujamaa figures, which symbolize unity.

I agree the carving is Makonde (Tanzania/Mozambique). But the hairstyle does not look right for a Maasai woman - they usually have clean-shaven heads. It looks more like a man's style. Perhaps it is another group - there are over 100 ethnic groups in Tanzania.

I was thinking headdress rather than hairstyle.:) Some women in the region have beaded headdresses in that shape, without something hanging down the back, whereas the young men's hairstyle you are thinking of is long at the back.

Is this sometimes called “the tree of life”? ( I guess by sellers)

Yes, I think a sellers' term.
Ujamaa was a political concept launched by president Julius Nyerere (if I am correct) to unite the different peoples of Tanzania. The Makonde were relative newcomers to the country, they embraced the symbolism because Ujamaa protected them.
