Does anyone know something about Native American wickerbasketthinweave.jpg wickerbasketthinweave2.jpg wickerbasketthinweave3.jpg baskets with inserts? Also, interested in what tribe might have made something like the one missing from the basket in the photo. Someone from Western Canada told me about the basket but not much, so was thinking maybe the tribe is from that area.

Some of this is taken from a listing as it's been listed for a while: It is very well made and fits snugly together in a tight but not forced way. The threads are not coming loose anywhere. This has the smallest weave pattern I've ever seen in "wicker." Not sure exactly what the fiber is that has been used. It is about 4" wide by 4" high. I was told by someone from Western Canada that it is missing an insert. a bamboo woven internal tray.

No, it isn't Native American. It's a traditional woven split bamboo and lacquer betel box, from the border area of Burma/Thailand, in a style from the Karen people.

As mentioned, it probably originally had fitted trays inside, to hold the necessary leaves and ingredients used in chewing betel nut. These are often used for other things, in areas where chewing betel nut isn't a common practice.

A search for "Karen woven betel box" will confirm.

If you have access to the book "Art of the Basket, Traditional Basketry from Around the World" by Bryan Sentance, a Karen tribal betel box like this is illustrated on page 104.

I'd forgotten it was there, until I saw it while leafing through the book today to see if I could find a clue as to where another basket may have originated.
