Basket tray thingie with wood bottom

I wasn't sure what to call it and even more so what category to put this in. this little tray is 7" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/4". Just wondering if it has some age to it and who might have made it. $1.00 at a yard sale.

I wonder is this was made with pine needles, like @Bdigger makes in his spare time?

 

Looks like pine needles to me. Appears that someone lacquered it or something.

May not be “pine needles “ the spots are throwing me off. But the same principle. It may be pine needles, just not a kind I’m familiar with. I can see what look like end covers in some places. I always remove the end covers from mine

 

Pen holder for a desk? It's too small for bread.
