This basket was purchased at an estate sale labeled Cherokee Basket. Measures 9" High - 13" diameter - 8.5" square bottom. Can anyone confirm it is Cherokee and how old?

There are a number of cultures in various parts of the world that produce somewhat similar looking baskets made of cane and bamboo. While I see how these baskets might be identified as Cherokee, I think Suzy60s basket and the one Komokwa linked to are much more likely to be from the Philippines or, possibly, from the region of NE South America (Venezuela and the Guianas).

This is a basket from the island of Mindanao, Philippines -

And a view of the bottom -

And another, also from Mindanao (note the almost identical rim treatment) -

Here is one from Venezuela -

And one collected in Dutch Guiana -

Suzy60's basket and the Philippines and SA comparisons I have posted are all woven in a diagonal twill pattern, and have reinforced rims. Most Cherokee twill plaited baskets are woven with the elements oriented vertically rather than diagonally -

Some Cherokee baskets are woven with diagonal twill, but these are usually double walled, and the rims are not reinforced -

You can also see that the cane used in the Cherokee baskets is not as finely split as that on the Philippines and South American baskets, and the nodes of the cane are quite visible.

If you want to look at more Cherokee baskets for comparison, to get a feel for what they should look like, here are the pages of search results in the collection of the National Museum of the American Indian -

    A very nice basket, Suzy.
Suzy's basket is from Mindanao imo. Closely related to Indonesian (rice) baskets, with that square base and strong thick rim.
The wavy pattern could be a stylised Naga, a favourite theme in the Southeast Asian archipelagos.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I love learning! You and your examples have taught me so much about native cultures worldwide. Little did I think that this basket came from Asia.
