Featured Bakelite Stuff

    Went to an estate sale this morning and bought these. I don't kow what bakelite smells like. Hoping these are bakelite. The pin is suppose to be a pack of cigarettes.

    It looks like both are at least partly bakelite. Have you tested with the pink paste silver polish or baking soda yet? Silver polish works, but baking soda is usually handier. Get a cotton swab damp and dunk in baking soda. Rub that on the back of the suspect piece of bakelite, holding close to your nose if possible. Rub hard and take a good sniff. If it's bakelite there will be a formaldehyde smell and the q-tip should turn yellow or brown. Then wipe the item off. Red bakelite doesn't test chemically well if at all, so the dogs might not test positive no matter what they are.

    Just in case. I think I'm seeing paint on the bracelet. Do NOT test on painted side of pieces; it takes the paint off.
