Bakelite or...?

Every so often, I find interesting plastic jewelry. Problem is, I have no idea if it's bakelite or what. I rubbed these pieces with a q-tip sprayed with some 409 cleaner. No reaction on the bangle. The necklace's q-tip darkened a small amount it looked like, but it's not that yellow streak that's apparently supposed to appear on bakelite. The necklace has a vintage ring clasp. Any idea what kind of plastic these pieces are?

That necklace is 1960s plastic, I have one bought by Ma then. Made to look like agates and other semi precious stones.

Agree necklace is plastic. I've seen that exact style. Pretty, but not bakelite.

I also don't think the bracelet is bakelite either -- but disclaimer, without having the bracelet in the hand, cannot be 100% sure. It does have the nice swirls, kind of like spinach bakelite, but something about how the edge is cut makes it look like it is probably a material other than bakelite. Again, without having it in the hand, hard to tell.

The best thing is to ID it with smell. You don't even need any chemicals, just rub the edge or side (where there isn't any embellishment) with your thumb maybe 15-20 seconds, like you are polishing it almost, a fair amount of speed and strength, until you actually feel a tiny bit of warmth from your thumb from the friction. Then quickly bring to your nose to smell -- bakelite has sort of a "burning insulation" smell. Unmistakable.

It is good to have that skill because you can do it even in a thrift store or estate sale on the spot!
