This looks like a variant of the E G Webster and Son marks. They did a lot of pseudo-Dutch designs in the 20's. Note that the Gothic W & S at the end of one of their marks looks the same as what's on your box, Terry. In addition they also used similar pictorials.

    Take a look here : http://sterlingflatwarefashions.com/SPMfgs/SPW1.html

Thanks all. After cleaning it shows a lot of copper.

I think I'm going to try the silver chloride on it.

There was a very large, round, EG Webster platter with Dutch motif at our senior center thrift shop recently. Almost more copper than silver plate, but they still wanted $30 for it. It must have sat there for 2 months before they marked it down - to $25. What was the point of that? I noticed when I was there last week that it's finally gone. I hope that if someone paid $25 for it that they really loved it.

You just rub on wetted silver chloride and the silver bonds with the copper surface making it look like silverplate. May be the way this was originally plated.

WOWSER! Nice "touch-up". Silver chloride, huh? I have a couple of cherished plate pieces that are not as worn as your piece was when you started, so this may be an alternative to having them re-plated. I could not justify the expense of re-plating when my heirs will be dumping them in the landfill in a year or so, but this treatment would "restore" them to presentable while I am still around.

    Thanks for showing this!!!!!

I think that's what it is from my weak memory. It's just some white powder from an estate sale that was labeled "silver powder for plating copper". Just wet with water and rub it in. The base metal must be pretty clean to work. I've used it on worn through to brass too.

I think this piece looks like the original plating was similarly done. It doesn't really look like electroplate. It won't polish to a reflective type sheen.

Since typing silver chloride in this thread I now get google ads selling silver chloride for medicinal purposes.

I did find a "recipe" for using it to plate any base metal. The article also notes that if you want a shiny silver finish you have to polish the base metal after cleaning thoroughly, before applying the silver chloride.
