I have a good austro-hungarian snuffbox which is well hallmarked but not clearly on a side of the date, for me it can be 1849, the photography is later clearly, it seems to be a normal photography on paper made as remembrance.
In a discussion about that item, a great specialist says me it was a fake(as near all it sees from me…), in my opinion the man who can make that now can have more money making for his own artistic talent than making copies with a relative value, the authenticity in not a problem, just a question about age before putting it for sale.
I put more pictures on this link.
The snuffbox gilded and in good condition.

    Beautiful!
It looks like 1849 to me as well. And Viennese, but you already knew that.
As far as I know, the right hand line of the 4 was never crossed, so when worn away it looks like a 1 which has shifted a bit to the right. That is the way it looks on your charming snuffbox.

    Thanks to confirm my opinion,
1849 is certainly right, stylistically, if it was 1819, it will be really different, in France they call this design Charles X at his time and it was a beginning of the 18th century in form with a lot more "fanfreluches", here the engravings and embossing foliages and no more with the modernism of the biedermeier period.
The use of the guilloché was very "à la mode" at this period too with the use of the "tour à guillocher" which was more primitive before.

The image is that of Nicholas II, last Emperor of Russia.

Nicholas II was Tsar from 1894 - 1917. So the date is probably 1899?

The photograph is a later addition. Happens regularly.:)

That mark wouldn't have been used in 1899.

For what it's worth, looks like 1849 to me too...

Thanks for your searches, the photography is a later remembrance addition, as very often seen on items concernig kings or emprors and can be from the same origin as those from Debora.
And austro-hungarns were not really good friends in 1889, the box was certainly the property of a nostalgic guy who has the snuffbox in his possesion.

Thanks, that confirmes what we think about the date, stylistically the same idea with a portrait cartouche and foliages in the front for opening facility.:bookworm:
