    hi folks

found these 3 little painted doggies (£3 each) today in a house clearance shop

the two littler ones are stamped austria on base (1 1/2" tall)

the bigger (2 1/2 ") one looks a different material, bronze maybe ?

any info relating to them appreciated

    Charming pack!
Viennese bronze if metal under the paint is yellow as for the spaniel, others seem rather spelter, I see grey metal where the paint is worn.
    google « plombs de Nuremberg » :)

    nice pictures, very lovely.
the yellow color on the bottom is a red flag.
if it is not paint, then is it perhaps not made of bronze but brass.
    how heavy is it?.

Raw bronze is yellow, it is applied patina which gives it brown color:)

Bronze: copper +tin: Copper is reddish orange color and tin is more yellowish.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze

copper + zinc you get brass

The main indicating factor of the differences between brass and bronze is that bronze will have a much redder color hue than brass would. Brass will look more yellowish due to its higher zinc content.

"There is a widely held belief that the natural color of bronze is brown. While it is true that many bronze sculptures you may have seen have been given a brown patina, the natural color of quality made bronze is actually gold."

    Tin is silvery white.;)
Bronze can have other minerals in the alloy that influence the colour.
Below is a table from one of the sites I use for archaeological bronzes and bronze alloys. If we look at the bronze made from only copper and tin, you can see that nr 3, copper with 12% tin (Sn), is yellow.

"The alloys of bronze range in colour from red to yellow (See Table 2). The percentage of tin in the alloys influences the colour changes. The alloy No. 7, which contains the least tin at 5 %, is the reddest, followed in this order of alloys No. 4, No. 1, No. 5, No. 9, No. 2, No. 6, No. 3 and finally alloy No. 8 with 15 % tin, which is yellow (See Figure 8).

    Number Alloy Colour Munsell code
    1
    CuSn8 Light red 10R 6/8
    2 CuSn10 Reddish yellow 7.5YR 8/6
    3 CuSn12 Yellow 10YR 8/6
    4 CuSn8Pb2 Light red 10R 6/6
    5 CuSn10Pb2 Reddish yellow 5YR 7/6
    6 CuSn12Pb2 Yellow 10YR 7/6
    7 CuSn5Pb1 Light red 7.5R 6/8
    8 CuSn15Pb4 Yellow 2.5Y 8/6
    9 CuSn9Pb9 Reddish yellow 7.5YR 7/6
    10 CuSn8Pb14 Pale yellow 2.5Y 7/4
    11 CuAg4Au1 Red 7.5R 5/8 "
