I think it is Chinoiserie, Western made 'in the Chinese manner'. Art Deco?
Like the fan shape of course;). The bat with the lion(?) face shows the maker didn't know Chinese symbols very well.

Sorry to disagree Any but I think it maybe Chinese carved, often you don't see them painted but I was going to bid on something like this until it went too high a few months ago.

It does look like the composite stuff produced by companies like Siroco, but I can also see how it appears to be fret cut from a plank. Either way, I'd guess mid-50s to mid 60s.

My vote would be composition for a few reasons. I don't know what the regular lines in the edges are (vertical lines given how it is lying down for photo) but only Rsn I can imagine for those is some means to help its removal from a mold. Also the brick-red color of the stuff isn't like any wood I know. Also if u look close at chips they are like chips in ceramic, not wood. That's mah story and ahm stickin' to it! And ya know ahm probably bein' honest 'cause ah ain't got no dawg in this fight.

It does look like the kind of decorative Oriental theme item that was made in a mold. But if it is wood.....

I thought the close up of the back cut outs would show it to be wood....but I'll revisit the item soon....

Real wood. However, it is produced after 2000.
