Chinese, looks like it has a bit of age, perhaps mid century or possibly even inter-war. Certainly copying some Japanese elements in the design.

It looks Japanese to me. The mark apparently says “Deep river”

Is it handpainted? It has Chinese themes but the base is japanese so at least the porcelain is made in Japan. The design is mostly japanese. The backmark appears similar to an Arita hizen backmark but it is not Arita hizen, maybe some form of Arita imari.

That's very interesting, I see the mark now you have highlighted it. I've never seen it formatted this way in Japanese the stylisation of the character looked straight out of the Chinese way.

Hello Ken: thank you for the research. May I ask: what data base do you use? I am trying to improve my knowledge of this stuff.

I'm afraid I don't have any particular database, but find myself consulting gotheborg.com more often than not. Gerald Davison has his famous "Marks on Chinese Ceramics". The Fukugawa mark was from "Imari, Satsuma and other Japanese Export Ceramics" by Nancy N. Schiffer.
