I thought this was a glass lid but my mom says this is an ashtray. I would some help to know what this glass thingabob is and why does it have a black plastic or plastic looking rim around it? The dimensions are roughly 4" x 2 1/2" x 1". Thank you for your assistance. Rob

It looks like a wine bottle coaster to me. Are you sure the rim is not silver(plated)?

If the star in the bottom is raised, it is a coaster for a glass so that the glass won't 'stick' to it. If it is flat, it could be either a coaster or ashtray.
Some I have are sterling and some are silver plate. Look for any marks.

I agree silver rim coaster often used as an ashtray when smoking was chic.

    Agree with coaster/ashtray.
Most likely sterling rim. Polish it, you'll find a mark.

I now use these as furniture coasters. They're a little bit bigger than a furniture coaster, but do the same job.

I always wanted to try the aluminum foil, baking soda and hot water method to see if it really will clean silver. Just watched a youtube video on the subject seemed simple enough. Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Rob

Don’t do it, the baking soda thing is too harsh like dips, use a gentle polish on silver!!!

The star is not raised inside but there are triangular raised 1/2" glass lines. The star is raised on the outside. Thank you for the information. Rob

when smoking was Joe Cool...I can not even walk into a store without covering my nose for the possibility of smoke. I go into hacking and coughing and spitting up and running back to the car to put the air conditioner on to help with slowing my breathing down and get some better air to breath and clearing my throat and spitting up some more until I can try it again. Thank you. Rob

I thought that myself at first. I will try to clean it with Brasso unless someone tells me otherwise. Rob

Neither of these methods are used by people who love and value silver.
If you wish to ruin your pieces - carry on with either method. Just don't come back crying to us.
These are both NO - NO - NO Don't Do It! ! !
