Ashanti Fertility Dolls

    These were lying around on a chest of draws in my only relatively close-by charity shop, and although they had obviously been mutilated, decided I wanted them. I’ve never seen or handled any of these dolls before, and the price wouldn’t break the bank.

    They are a simple design, so were they made for poor Ghanaian maidens? Are they made for the tourist trade? Forgeries made at the back of the charity shop, or just a typical traditional design?

    Why would the arms have been mutilated? What do members think?

    I would say ..broke off rather than mutilated......possibly by rough play by children...

    they appear to be vintage tourist items...
