This proves you dont always need diamonds and gold to have beauty.
I stumbled upon this neglected beauty online and payed 4,5€ for it. It was just described as 'silver plated necklace' with some very blurry pictures. It missed its dangle and a paste, and as soon as I got it yesterday I replaced them with what I had laying around.
Might still change the paste and change the pearl to a nice real one at one point but didn't have the right materials so just went with what I have and now I m already wearing it.
Its a sterling silver and paste lavaliere necklace from around 1900.
I believe these were made to imitate the 'good stuff': diamond and gold jewelry that the owner didn't want to take on their travels around the world.
I already have a small collection of these imitation paste jewelry, found for cheap.
Wouldn't mind finding the real deal for peanuts one day though...

Thank you all for the likes!
Silverbell, thank you! I also really love it. It has the very typical 'zweepslag' art nouveau line in its design:D

    Love it, Dessert.
    Yes, classic AN zweepslag.:joyful:

As an aside, my British nieces love the Dutch word 'slagroom', which obviously means something entirely different in UK English.
So they order everything with slagroom. (Can't take them anywhere!:hilarious:)

Hmm….. slag equates to a fallen woman, and also to a scrote in police slang.

Oh dear. I'd imagine the original doesn't involve ladies of purchaseable virtue.

Obb, Dutch is such a fun language. I m so grateful I can help you understand some of it! :hilarious:
'Zweepslag-motief': its a typical invention of the Belgian art nouveau architect Victor Horta: a curving line: like a whip, frozen in time an instant before it smaches.
Difficult to explain, easy to show:

Whiplash design is the correct translation.
Art nouveau whiplash design. Its all over if you know it.
Also, Belgium being the birth place of the art nouveau, its definitely worth a visit
(Have a small tourist business) :D

That's the one my nieces mean.
Slagroom is whipped cream, but they enjoy ordering it with anything, just to say slagroom.:hilarious:
I don't think Americans get the joke, it is more of a British thing.
As they say, the US and the UK are divided by a common language.:playful:

AJ, I would also love to live in the Horta house. I would NOT love to renovate it/keep up with all the repairs though.:greedy:

The small tourist business is our main 'job' so I would say it provides enough for us to live modestly

Wonderful.:) So you'll be able to advise me on a nice hotel and show me around if I ever visit your beautiful city again. I've seen the usual sights, but you'll know those special places.

I used to be a tour guide when I was in my 20s, to supplement the income from my shop. I did mostly local and regional tours, but sometimes I was hired for special nation-wide tours for multi-national companies.

I wonder if a lot of confused Star Trek fans end up going there! (the Horta was a famous Star Trek "alien".)

Tour guide is a nice job, IMO. In my teens I wished to become tour guide but mom was not agree, she insisted on Maths. So Maths it was. Now I take a lot of pleasure in showing guests around and explaining about landmarks in BG.

I never trained as a tour guide, I basically did what you do.
My initial training was in PR, and I have always loved culture and history. I was asked by someone at the tourist office who had heard about me, because I knew a lot about our region and a fair bit about the rest of the country, and I "looked representative" (her words:shy:).
    Later I studied theology.
