I found this wine colored wine glass that seems to be assembled in three parts: the swirled top part; the stem with the tulip shaped top part and the base, which has a raised area around the stem. The glass starts off dark and becomes pink at the bottom of the stem. Am I right in thinking this is Art Glass?

Well. I don't know enough to be sure. I see a lot of glasses, etched, interesting shapes and colors, etc. I am trying to learn how to spot hand made art rather than pretty factory work. Thanks.

Art glass wine glass! <<My opinion! ;) It does appear to be a hand blown goblet, does it have a pontil ground down on the bottom of the foot base? I cannot see that dark base..:cat:

No the base is flat. It looks like the stem was set into a preformed base. I don't know how this works though. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Pretty!

Mikasa's yearly factory store sales here in Long Beach were extremely popular back in the 70s and 80s. Did you go to those, @KikoBlueEyes?

Now they have outlet stores in the major outlet malls, but people stood in line for hours at that store.

I had a friend that did, and I remember her lining up for sales. I went once and they had piles of boxes with pretty things.

They became much better known for all the baaaad lalique-ish style things they imported, but also had a lot of really fun post modern things.

    I miss it :(

I do have a small container about the size of a sugar bowl with lid that is marked Mikasa epiqure one - oven to table to dishwasher - Japan. They must be very versatile.

Update - Based on @cxgirl's wonderful research, I found a post for glasses that still had tags and a box. The tags say Crystal, Mikasa, Belgium. On Replacements.com, the company history indicates that Mikasa started adding stemware in the 80's. A number of posts label them as handcrafted, though you know how reliable that information is.

I found epiqure white not one on Replacements.com, but their history of the company has a piece about the oven to table thing: "In an effort to stay as competitive as possible during the 1980's, Mikasa added crystal stemware, stainless steel flatware and other household accessories to its product offerings. Having conquered the "oven-to-table" and the "dishwasher safe" market, Mikasa continued to look for new opportunities adding casual chic to fine bone china, and decorative accessories." :)

I had 2 sets of ironstone granite dinnerware in yellow for years. The sets came in matching hex shaped boxes with telescoping tops, very cute.

    Still have one of these.

They had great deals on flatware, tableware and glass and decorative items like vases.

As you noted above, they didn't manufacture their own things - a lot of great design(ers) from many countries got distributed to the best department stores.

Vera is one I recall. I never stood in line, I just wandered in there for fun :)

There was also a giant pic'n'save (later mac frugal's) next door, new and still super cheap at the time.
