    Hello,

I'm having a heck of a time trying to find any information online about the pattern name and rough dates for this tea cup.

It is stamped Royal Chelsea England on the base, with the numbers 23994 handpainted on it.

The design looks and feels hand painted.

    Any help is appreciated.

It is lovely, and looks Art Deco to me. The pottery people will be along, they will probably want to see the base.

I agree with AJ about art deco. Pattern likely never had a name. Pretty!

Thank you for the information. As I'm relatively young and learning about antiques and identification, could you tell me where I could learn how to date this, or what about it gives away that it is a 1930s backstamp. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, I ought to have said a bit more. ;) It's a stamp that's in a couple of reference books. Even without, that squared off handle is a giveaway for the Deco period, as are stylised orange flowers like that. And the lines.

The trade name Royal Chelsea was used from c.1943 especially on teaware for the North American market. Marks do not include the company name, but have the script ‘Chelsea’, ‘New Chelsea’ or ‘Royal Chelsea’ trade name below an anchor. in September 1951 the business and trade names were sold to Susie Cooper Pottery Ltd and the new business then operated under the name New Chelsea China Co. Ltd.
