There were two pieces that I found a while ago and wanted to confirm my conjectures about the pieces. I hope you will all be kind enough to help me. The first is a large brooch with a stripped green glass center. I started looking at pieces like this and because of the C catch and the pin extending out of the catch but a round hinge, I got confused. This thing is big at 2 1/2 long and 1 3/4 wide. I added a photo of the only place I could see the possibility of a mark but it could be scratches. :)

The second piece is this jade (I think) pendant with two fishes carved on the sides of the calligraphic characters. The ring catch seems to put it in an earlier age than yesterday, but there is no guarantee that is the original chain. I thought the color of the jade was pretty and the pendant is medium size at 1 1/2 inches. Any thoughts welcomed.

The green one has the gold "radiator paint" I associate with 1930s costume. I'm not sure the pin quite qualifies as Deco. The pendant looks like serpentine. I'm no jade expert, but that one I know.

Thanks. I like to learn about these kind of things. I kept seeing this kind of brooch as art deco but you know how some sellers are. Radiator paint- that's a good one.

Artisan brooches and brooches from North Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America can also have that.
It is always better to look at every aspect of a brooch. Does it tick all the boxes? Yes, then it is an antique brooch.

I am fine with Art Deco.
As Ruth thought, it is serpentine. This is a harder serpentine known as 'serpentine jade', which is a confusing name.
The character is Shou, symbol for longevity. The fish are also auspicious.
Many of these serpentine jade pendants have been coming out of China since the 1990s.

I think the brooch is Porphyry glass.
I always thought that was German but I can’t remember where I read that

I got a German vibe from the brooch.
I'm sure @Ownedbybear can tell us if we're right, she probably has one in her hoard.:playful::)

Yep. I'm used to seeing it in other colors, buy porphyry glass it is. Not sure it was German, but definiltely made in central Europe somewhere.

Excellent. Your comments are so appreciated. I was enamored of the brooch when I first saw it. I got it home to study it and got lost. I am so grateful that you agreed it was Art Deco. This is a period that I find most interesting.
The jade part is a little disheartening, but it wasn't very expensive so really nothing lost. When I realized there was no mark, I kinda figured it wasn't jade. Knowing the meaning is way cool. Thank you.

I see where you got the idea it was porphyry glass and German. I searched and saw a lot of vibrant colored striped glass jewelry hailing from Germany. Thank you. I never heard of porphyry glass before.

Agreed on porphyry glass. It shows up on later post war German pieces, too. Although, I do speculate that some of the glass was Bohemian, given the expertise there. Some of the Coro slag glass is similar, too.

Anyhow, I think the brooch is transitional, so early Art Deco. It's got the look of not long after WW1 before real geometry crept in.

Perfect. Thank you very much! This is so helpful understanding what to look for when getting pieces. I think it will be so lovely on. I have learned so much from you.
