Hullo there. I bought these two mortars from an auction in England. They were listed as 18th century. The auction house is not that reliable on dates or items being genuine in my experience, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me info of if they're genuinley 18th century or something else, thanks.
Both are about 4 inches tall

18th century? Probably. They ARE very old, I can tell that by looking at them and seeing how they're made. I'd say Victorian or late Georgian (so maybe 1800-1900).

1700s? Maybe. They look of the style. They have the wear and the dents and dings and everything else. And they're handmade, I can see that.

Thanks for the input. what you said was what I had going on in my head. I'm just an amateur regarding antiques, but I believe I'm fine at judging how old things are. If I was to guess I'd put the more gold coloured one with the pestle to roughly very late 18th century to more likely mid to late 19th century (don't have a solid idea on this one,) and the darker one to late 18th century to maybe early-mid 19th century... But yea Any more opinions would be great thanks

Also I know the pics aren't great, but does anyone have insight on what the metals they're made of are? Brass for the gold coloured one and bronze for the darker one? Any easy ways I can find out?

Interesting, where does this idea come from if you wouldn't mind explaining? Being quite largely different in colour I felt they'd be different metals. I've looked at both through a decent 10x magnifier.... The gold coloured one just basically looks the gold colour... The darker one looks the colour it is in the photos, but has lots small green dots when magnified... also some bronzey coloured ones. Dunno if that's useful info lol just thought I'd share. My reaction was really that the darker coloured one was bronze

*Edit* I just noticed in the pics they appear the same colour roughly... This pic below shows the difference quite well I guess

well...mine is brass, & yours is dented on the base in a similar way.
& unless I miss my guess, yours is not cast, like bronze would be.
and while your color is darker...it's not bronze darker...but brass darker..

    IMHO......

Ah interesting pic. Very nice mortar! My darker mortar is yes colour wise halfway between the brass 30 years and tin 20 years, so yes that does look like the brass darkening, but I dunno, still think it may be bronze. It's very similar to this Google image below stated as bronze. Mine even has the base, rim and inside the same different shade compared to the body of the mortar like the pic below, I'd say at least the colour of my mortar 95% resembles this image

They're both made of brass. Of that I'm certain. Very common in the 1700s and 1800s to have brass or bronze mortars and pestles.

But if Durrants auction house calls it bronze...& they had it in their paddy paws...I guess that from just a photo...I could be mistaken !
