    Approx 12" tall I bought them thinking they were wood from my seat at the auction Upon closer inspection, I think they are some type of stoneware or pottery Their outsides are very smooth, they are very heavy for their size but appear to have some hollowing inside because to the noise they make when you tap them His toes are gone and the last pic shows what material he is but I am not sure what it is

    How old do you think they are? Would these be terra-cotta? Does anyone recognize anything about them? Any help would be very much appreciated

    Thanks!

    Do they feel like crushed stone? Resin?

    Is it possible they are the crushed wood fiber from the 1940s/50s?

    No.
    In the second pic you can see the piece is hollow because the piece covering the bottom has had some damage on the left & you can see into the piece at about 11 o'clock. Definitely cast in a mold, man made material.

    We could ask @Any Jewelry who they are.

    Are you talking about #1? That just appears to be a chip.
    #2 appears to be a "pop"

    Chinese figure 1_LI.jpg

    You can see the figure has walls, is not solid, which the sound produced by your tapping also indicated. Point is that they are not carved & do not appear to be any type of ceramic.

    @Bronwen
    I think what you are looking at is the shadow from the indent above the base.
    From the last picture.

    Hi That is what I thought they were but they clink like ceramic and are cold to the touch Plus they are very heavy for their size Heavier than you would think That is why I was thinking stone or maybe stoneware The material looks a little gritty from where the toe is missing

    Also, any guesses on age? I can't find any similar, like this material, to go off of

    To me, they look newer.
    Chinese decorator items. At 12", maybe garden decor. Especially since they seem to be pottery or cement.

    2 of the Immortals?
    Confucius and Guanyin?
    @Any Jewelry any ideas who they are?

    It reminds me of a figure I have, sorry for the bad photos, it's heavy and older. Her head was off and I repaired it and the body looked similar to yours. You might want to check to see if Fan Co NY made Gemstone figures like yours.

    Definitely Guanyin. I think the one with the high hat could be Lu Dongbin, a Tang era scholar who is often regarded as an Immortal.
    Yours is also Guanyin.
    Guanyin was originally male, the Bodhisattva (Buddha aspect) Avalokiteshvara. In China Avalokiteshvara 'merged' with a pre-Buddhist Chinese Goddess. That is why Guanyin is often depicted as an androgynous figure, the way yours and gauntlett's are. The bare chest shows that he is not actually a she.;)

    @say_it_slowly
    Fan Co NY, is probably the import company and not the maker.

    Entirely possible, it's just sitting on a shelf but at least still has a label and the little bit of looking I did for the company wasn't very enlightening. Since mine had it's head off it was just a curiosity thing as I doubt it has any value but it feels lovely in hand and with some age. Not sure what it's made of, some composite I think.
