Featured Are these cufflinks or something else?

They're put together like old cufflinks but they look too big for the buttonholes on shirt sleeves. Could they be for some other purpose?

They also look like coins but coins don't rust and there's nothing on the back side.

    Thanks!

Coat buttons, removable so you can wash the coat. I'm betting it was an Austrian loden wool or something like that. They buttons are made to look like "Maria Theresas" - coins featuring Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The coins were in use as trade coinage all over the Middle East and parts of Europe right up to WWI.

Well,'Austrian Loden Coats' sent my mind off scurrying-to The Sound of Music & The Trapp Family .
Here's an example of the real people (Trapp kids),being as good good-looking as their cinema 'doppelgangers',that's one in a billion !

I have a fabulous tweed style coat made of waxed Austrian wool. Very smart and it shrugs off snow. It’s about seventy years old and looks new. They know coats.

Austrian Loden made me think of my own coat.
I wear Duffel coats (the name is derived from Duffel, the small Belgian town) all the time.
We call it 'houtje-touwtje jas' because of the wooden claps
I even wear it during Summers.
(Have been wearing 2 Duffels for the last 20 years and I was so happy I found a 'new' -to me- one a few weeks ago...)
With a nice Old Flemish brooch attached to it, it even looks a bit posh. At least in my mind.
    They are sooooo cosy! :D

I had a proper traditional Gloverall duffle coat as a twelve year old. Brilliant things.

I love the look, but wool hates me and wants to hurt me. Literally feels like it's burning me. I shall look on with jealousy.

I've long wanted one but, boy, are they pricey! Worth it, I'm sure, if one can afford it.

I didn't know that brand. Gloverall, made in England I read. Oh boy, wouldn't pay those prices.
Mine (secondhand new stock) cost 9€. Original Duffel from Belgium :cat:
    More authentic, far better price
I m sure more secondhand is around

My father worked as a guard for the state prison system for a while when I was young. He had a peacoat with a "Maryland Corrections" patch on the shoulder. As a teen I pulled it out of the closet and wore it with that patch still on it. I got some strange looks but as a teen in the 70's, I probably thought that was a good thing.
