    You learn something new everyday.

These are situated in the pavements and sidewalks of the old town of the nearby city centre.

    They are 200 years old.

I have walked over them many hundreds of times yet never noticed them before.

These are the ones that survived the WWII bombings.

The shoes are for size comparison and not mine.

When I read about them, I went into the city and walked the streets to see if it was true.
They are outside old town houses.

So is that what they represent, that a town house is or was here?

The buildings are still there, many are not used as homes now.
These items are not used now.

I understand some are fused into position from the heat of incendary bombs.
92% of the city was wiped from the map between 1939-45

I used to walk the beat in the old town in my early years in the police, never ever saw them, that was probably because I was looking upwards for cat burglars :hilarious:

That is very interesting. How did they lift the covers? Always thought that any type of cover in the ground had to do with sewage and waste. Hmmm.

I think they were lifted from inside the cellar by the occupant, the coal was deposited and the lid replaced by the coalman, who then went to collect payment.
