    G'day,

I picked up these two Tapestry vases recently and trying to figure out where and who made them.

Marked with 'Royal' with a sun type marking and number.

They sit about 30cm tall. I believe they are European.

    Any ideas welcomed. WhatsApp_Image_2022-12-31_at_09.44.44_6_50.jpeg WhatsApp_Image_2022-12-31_at_09.44.44_5_50.jpeg WhatsApp_Image_2022-12-31_at_09.44.44_4_50.jpeg

Hm. Gut feel is Japanese but don't ask me why.

Never even heard of a tapestry vase. Interesting!

It's basically like when you break your age and they put it in a cast... except it's on a vase and they paint fancy pictures on it. :pompous:

I suspect that Royal was an importer of Japanese items.

I've not seen anything done like this in ceramic clay or porcelain before, but I can tell you how this appearance was made: the fabric pattern in the surface was achieved by rolling the wet clay vase onto the surface of the work table covered with duck cloth of some rougher sort or burlap of some finer sort. Then, a typical tapestry subject was rolled on with transfers and over painted on in the typical colors of tapestry yarns. There is a good amount of hand painting, but I think it's all done over a transfer.

While these look to be very well marked, something about them seems off to me. They look to have never been used ever. The bottoms are white as the driven snow, as though they have been stored in padded boxes since their inception.

Never mind that I've never seen anything quite as odd as this pair!

LoL : It does have a "cast" appearance to it! Like the gauze that's wrapped and then plastered on!

I suspect Bakersgma is correct about Royal being an importer too..

If I were a betting person, I would bet Japanese.

Still researching... but I think it may be Royal Bayreuth, Bavarian. There are a couple of similar tapestry vases/jugs with similar scenes to this one. They all have various markings on the bottom, some with none, but all with a 4 digit number. Mine are marked 5024. So it could be possible that they were exported somewhere else, someone else gold marked them. Then they found their way to London.

Would you attach links to those other vases you found, David?

Thought I had sent one, but don't think I was logged in.

    Found this one: https://www.rubylane.com/item/712219-T125072316-3/Royal-Bayreuth-Tapestry-Vase

Tapestry artwork is a different scene but there are similarities, especially with the tree.

Still struggling with the marking though. I found a NIPPON marking that had a similar 'sun' but obviously this doesn't say NIPPON. Just Royal... still stumped.

Well, colour me a little confused now. The impressed numbers do look continental rather than Japanese. There is a gilded rim on the Royal Bayreuth vase which isn't apparent on OP's. Hmmm.
