When I get a few rusty, dirty twisted iron Lightning rods in the shop I'll just spray them down generously with KROIL then let it soak through the dirt and into the iron overnight. A FINE wire wheel on a drill to Lightly go over it removes all the mud and rust then another spritz to let it soak in then just a wipe with cloth like old T-shirts to but doesn't shine it up like polished steel. Here's some pics of how it turns out.............. the dirt and rust buildup are gone BUT the metal still is adequate to present as it loses it's sheen and looks like normal dark iron after a day or so, and doesn't affect painted surfaces as the one rod was painted red when I got it. ................ KROIL does have a mineral smell so it has to be done outside of your living quarters untill finished. Plus if you say it's going to be an outside piece it will help stand the time of rusting out.

Of course you don't want to do this technique to fancy things, But for inexpensive Iron items that need to be brought back from the dead so you can display outdoors or just as some old items in a room in your house , it works great

    Hi,
I always use stove polish on old iron. It is black and gives a flat finish with some slight shine. Here at the shore with all the salt air, I use it, for the outside stuff just needs to done every year. the inside stuff lasts for years.
