The latin inscription might narrow it down. Ah,French would be my guess.

As much as the item might look like an "egg cup" I think it was intended as a cigarette or toothpick holder (depending on dimensions.)

As Bakers has said, it is most likely a souvenir, but I like it! Is it copper with brass accents?

Whether or not it is an egg cup, I'd use it as one - maybe not for a real egg, but for one of the crystal, alabaster, glass or other eggs in my collection! (Aaargh... what don't I collect? And, yes, I have quite a collection of egg cups, too!)

Might you be able to take a photo with a real egg in it? That might help to determine if it was meant to hold an egg, or if it's for something else, as Bakers has suggested.
