I inherited this oil painting from my grandmother 22 years ago and have no information about it other than it was in the family for many years the signature is very difficult to read and all I can make out are what appears to be R a hill or something similar. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I enlarged your photograph and played with the color to see if I could bring out more of the signature.

Can you post a closer picture of the back of the canvas where the Windsor Newton information is located? That may help with dating the painting.

Looks like it might be Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. A popular subject.

It could be a view of Scafell Pike from a different angle or any number of mountainous areas.
    It was framed in London.

It looks like P.S. Hir??? to me.
    Maybe P.S.Hirst
The only problem Googling artist called Hirst is you keep getting Damian Hirst

    Where are you from?????

Your post reminds me of a time several years ago while at the shop, waiting on an out-of-state couple, we engaged in conversation. They were visiting parts of NE.

Never having been out West at that time, I strongly recommended that they visit Vermont. It was Fall, and I think VT has the best foliage of all of the NE states.
And.....besides that......It has mountains....narrow winding country roads with mountains on one side and pastures on the other.

Those wonderful mountains with the flaming colors of Autumn. My favorite time of the year.

Years later when I got to visit Montana, Wyoming, Co. etc. (they were from one of those States), I discovered the real thing, and thought to myself that if they did get to visit VT they must have had a good chuckle over my description of a mountain.

If they did visit VT they must have thought the mountains there were nothing more than hills.

The West is absolutely beautiful, but I still love NE and our "hills".

Despite its lack of mountains, sure they enjoyed New England's "quaintness." And for Fall colors... try Japan.
