Any help on this bowl, please? Who made it ... when ... looks like salt glaze to me. 13" diameter by 3 1/4" tall. Thanks IMG_7939.JPG IMG_7945 copy.jpg IMG_7948.JPG

How would you describe that thing center bottom? A maple leaf? with something in the center? A letter or just a shape?

Japanese tableware sometimes had something like that that held the center in shape - not slumping in the kiln. The ones I have seen most are a star shape.

It does look like a maple leaf with a W in the center, it rises about 1/8" up off the surface. I also can see what looks like coarse salt under the glaze, inside bowl. The spot that looks like a chip (last picture) is glazed over, so I think maybe a flaw in the process; shows the color of the clay though.

It might be a Western Stoneware Co mark. This is from Lehner's book of marks.

Western Stoneware has a web site, but I don't know if they're responsive.

BTW, R Spack, there is no way this bowl is salt glaze. I'm confused as to why you would say it is.

One of the comments in Lehner's about that mark is that it was found "on a recent bowl." So 80s?
