Saw the cart come out from the back & on the bottom shelf of it I saw 2 Barbie doll cases, so I grabbed them - never expecting to feel the weight they had. And when I opened them I found them full of clothes + a 1961 Midge + either a #2 Barbie or a #4 Barbie!!
When I first looked at the date on her rear I thought I had a 1st Barbie!
It says: Pat. Pend. MCMLVIII By Mattel Inc - and after deciphering the roman numerals into american I saw it was dated 1958! But researching it I found the first (#1) has holes in her feet with copper tubes in her legs and mine doesn't - which makes it a #2 or a #4 - can anyone please tell me the difference?!
Mine also has Japan on the bottom of her right foot (like the date/info on her rear this is worn a little - I can see PAN of the Japan (see photo)
Also mine is kind of sticky feeling?
Also it must have been stored in a hot humid container for a while; she has some green on her neck from the hoop earrings or the necklace.
ANY help/information would be appreciated - I know nothing about Barbies (& I'm a guy) - except being a picker & knowing some are valuable, so I did know to look on her rear for the date (but NEVER expected to see that date!)
    Thank you!
PS - Both dolls were nude but I did find the original b/w striped bathing suit in one of the drawers in the case!

I read something about if the body is milky? colored it's a #2 or if tan a #4 and something about eye brows arched instead of curved?
    Help please!!
PS - some of the clothes in the drawers including the first bathing suit! I will take out the dresses & outfits on the hangers & photograph too - the clothes have to be valuable if they are the first ones, right?

I can't help but among my Barbie clothes I had the ice skating outfit. Brings back memories.

    Edited to add

And I had the black and white bathing suit.
I would say JMHO, that given the length of the dresses, the clothes appear to be from the early 60's which is when I had my Barbie. I still have my Barbie in the case way back on a shelf I can not reach. LOL

That is all I know about dolls as I moved on to my E Z Bake Oven and never looked back.

I was just going to tag you Bou!

Barbies can be very confusing.........good luck in your search Journey. The clothes just might be worth more than the dolls.......unless the dolls are the original.

@journeymagazine A good friend of mine is a collector of older Barbies. She is not a member here, though. I just sent her an email message about your questions. Will let you know... in the past I haven't noticed any Barbie experts here, which is why I wrote to my friend. But there could be somebody here who can help.

I do know that the sticky feeling of the plastic on the Barbie is not a good sign. It indicates a deterioration that may not be reversible. But wait for others to comment!

Great find! I've never found old Barbies - but have sold a lot of vintage Barbie clothing! I have always laundered and ironed (when necessary) and made repairs if possible and they always have sold great! Good luck!

I figured they'd been in a hot storage somewhere - but if a #2 it should still be worth more than the $12.95 I paid for Barbie & clothes in the double size case & the $7.95 I paid for Midge, those clothes & case!
PS - Here is Midge; she's in better shape - except she is the one who has green on her neck from earrings & necklace.
Also 2 of the wigs are stuck to their stand (from heat?)

That's not Midge. It's a Barbie Fashion Queen doll from 1963.

    Thanks Northern Lights Lodge -
Here's the Midge's stamps(much clearer) and spme of the clothes in her case (+ the drawer full of shoes, comb, mirror etc) - I still have to separate & photograph the dresses & things in Barbie's case.

The Barbie Fashion Queen had both Midge and Barbie on her butt.

Barbie and Midge don't look anything alike.

My friend wrote, and said it is probably #4. Good work!

I'm took a screenshot of her comments and am uploading as an image, if it is not too large.

The last time I looked at my Barbie she was sticky. Now I know it is not uncommon.
Mine has the black bubble cut hairdo. I think I have Skipper too.
