I've had this spoon for a long time and haven't been able to find out anything about it. It looks to be an older spoon made in two parts. It measures 4.75" long, and feels light. I've always thought it was tin, but there seems to be a glint of another metal around the rim. Looks like a sheaf of wheat embossed at the end. I hope someone here can tell me about it! Thanks.

    Hi Renee!

    Welcome to Antiquers.......

Unfortunately I know nothing about your spoon, but hopefully someone else will.

Hello Renee - any other markings on the piece?

Hi there. No, no other markings that I can see. There is some darkening of the finish, possibly there might be something under it, but I knew not to try and clean it.

Hi Renee, welcome. From the look of your spoon, with what appears to be rather thin construction, it is most likely American coin silver, the motif is called 'sheaf of wheat', and would date early to mid 19th century. Wouldn't have been made in two parts, the rounded area on the back of the bowl is called a drop and was formed with a swage. Not sure why you prefer to leave it unpolished...

Welcome, Renee! I see you are under the impression that the "do not remove patina" rule applies to your spoon. In this case if it is coin silver as Cheryl has pointed out, cleaning and polishing is a good thing. Silver wants to shine!

Wait. Many recommend a sunshine cloth. Not polish

Polish is needed on this spoon. It has sat too long. Will take a lot of elbow grease with a sunshine cloth.

    Liquid polish.
    Wrights, Haggertys, or something similar.
Maas would work as well. Comes in a tube.

Or try a soft toothbrush and baking soda paste.
