Antique punch ladle - need help to decipher mark

Is there a difference between a toddy ladle and a punch ladle? Just curious.

My ladle measures 10" with a turned wood handle, and looks to have a light gold wash inside the bowl.

There are 2 marks on the silver - just below where it joins with the wood. One looks like a "13" to me .... So assuming it is 19th century German or Prussian coin silver. Did any other countries use this hallmark?

I simply cannot make out the other mark at all! Looks like a moose head (but I know that can't be right :))

I appreciate any thoughts on what this other mark could be.

Toddy ladles are a lot smaller than punch ladles, as the drink was far boozier. ;)

    I think that 13 is for 13 loth,820 parts silver to a 1000.Its german. But that's a guess,wait for the experts.

    Thanks for the info Bear!

The bowl measures 3" by almost 2" (7.5cm by 5.5cm) and holds 2 Tbsp (tablespoons) of liquid ... so .... toddy?

Loth! Yes, I've heard that term before, but just couldn't bring it to the useful part of my brain. Thank you Johnny!

Let me take back one bit of what johnny said. Not to quibble, but silvercollection.it says that 13 loth is equal to 812/1000.

I went looking to see whether I could see a City Mark that matched your second punch but came up short. Since I do not have a copy of Tardy, I was depending on the 2 online sources I know of that include this kind of thing and did not see it. Now, your mark looks quite worn, so I was having to imagine what the crisp illustrations would become after 130 years (or more.) :wacky:

Certainly looks toddy to me, rather than punch. Both are yummy. ;)

SIS - I think that could be it. Mine is so worn though, it's hard to know for certain.

tried to take better photos with the mark rotated a little

Uggh ... these don't look any clearer ... they're out of focus! Sorry ... my eyes are worn out.

Actually that second one looks very promising. Sometimes it's easier to see a worn mark when it's a little out of focus. ;)

Are you using the macro focus on your camera (the mode with the little tulip icon)? It usually helps significantly in keeping closeups in focus as long as I'm not closer to the item than the lens can handle.

Thank you fibald. I appreciate seeing those other examples of the unicorn head for Schwäbisch Gmünd (plus I got the opportunity to get out my "ALT-code" sheet for letters not found on my keyboard)

Yup ... the macro was being used ... but if the battery in the camera is not fully charged, it seems not to focus as well - or takes longer to do so than I have patience.

After charging the battery this morning I took some more shots - outside in brighter light.

Sounds annoying... I wouldn't have patience, either.
