I hope he isn't someone I should know or ill feel dumb.
Found this at my local thrift.
The frame is new but the print is much older. not a lithograph. no dotting.

It looks like Thomas Jefferson to me. What do you think?

There's a resemblance to the portrait of Jefferson by Mather Brown, but I'm not certain that isn't just coincidence. It's the mouth... gives the portrait an entirely different mein.

Had to look for a youngish Jefferson!! I do think there's a definite resemblance!!

This is a self-portrait of the French pasteliste Maurice Quentin de La Tour:

    Resembles him as well.

    Maybe it's just a type.

    Alexander Hamilton is my guess.

    My first guess, too.

Everybody looks alike in a powdered wig. Slight partial resemblance to Hamilton, but other portraits seem to form a consensus that Hamilton's chin was pointier and his eyes distinctively different than the guy in Bulldog's print. Or not. Your mileage (and eyesight) may vary...

Does anyone else see him as wildly out of proportion: head too small for shoulders; impossibly long neck; shoulders out of alignment & left one painted over? I see the bow for the wig but not the pigtail it should be tied to? I't like he's cobbled together. Are you sure it's a print of some (non-litho) type?

My vote is for Thomas Jefferson. Same bone structure, thin mouth, shape of the eyebrows. And the shape of the nose is very specific, thin, sharp, with that little 'dent' just above the tip:

Mouth is wrong for Jefferson. So are eyes. IMO

Just in case anyone wants a "word" to bandy about . . . the "dent" between the end of the nose and the beginning of the lips is called a "philtrum" ;).

I've been closely examining my philtrum since this topic first came up.

Have all of you examined your philtrum(s) lately? :D
Sorry, simply could not resist. :shame:

Looks like an ancestor of Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce) or is it just me that sees a resemblance. Not that this comment helps this thread at all.

I don't have one, my nose is straight. So without philtrum. My nose can be considered philtrum-less, maybe philtrum-deprived, or even considered to have a philtrum handicap, though not a disability, it doesn't affect my sense of smell.
I'm off to smell the roses.

I knew I had to know that word and it meant something else, thanks, Aqui.
I thought yourturn referred to my mentioning the dent just above the tip of the nose, but she meant another dent altogether. Yes, I have that one. So I am not philtrum-less, yay.

Another I was considering was the Marquis de Lafayette. I think his nose is wrong, though.

He was the first one I thought of as well. But then I thought Jefferson, and the nose and other details are right imo.

It's not Jefferson; this guy has a cleft chin and Jefferson didn't.
