Featured Antique (free) kitchen side table -- what do you call these?

I was leaving the GW (on foot) and this small table was out back. Obviously the table has had heavy use, probably was in some kind of art studio, but honestly those paint splatters were part of the appeal in a weird way. Genuine use and then some!

Trying to stay completely away from larger items, the table was the last thing I needed. I stood there kind of admiring it, when the GW employee says, "$1.99". So I'm still thinking, "last thing I need", when he says, "Tell you what, if you can come back for it in 30 minutes, it's free."

It's actually the only time I've had a GW person offer something for free, so I got it.

Now what did I get for free? I'm thinking this would look super cool in some setting or another and maybe could get $30 on Craigslist. The table is structurally sound. Would I call the bones of this an "antique kitchen side table"? Has a drawer and one of those pull out surfaces too.

That would be super for rolling out dough and making candy desserts once cleaned up.
Wish my thrift shops would say take it away for free.
I have a cabinet here that I bought at a yard sale, many years ago and the owner delivered it to me for free. Mine is the same color on the legs and has similar wheels.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That could be very useful. There's even a bar on one side to hang towels or other things!

It's the first time in 20 years anything has been "free" there. I think the guy in the back thought this table was dumpster material with the paint on it.

Anyway, with the wooden casters and square bolts, thinking this is... maybe 1920s?? I'm not great with older furniture. What era?

Would call this a kitchen worktable. If the top is original, think it is post-war. Would expect a wood or porcelain top on a pre-war piece. I kind of get the impression that the top is a replacement, and the table could be older. What does it look like underneath?

I'll add a few more photos, never know what might be helpful.

I wondered if the top might have been a vintage replacement just as it seemed newer than the rest.

Guessing this little cutout was something added later.

Right now I just have this sort of "half shot" of underneath. Taken with a flash so shows every stain. The shiny wood on the right is underneath the wood tray that pulls out. I can maybe get more photos later if helpful. Just not at home right now.

    Love it!

I had an old enamel top work table of similar design with a single drawer that I picked up for a few dollars.(under $5 as I recall.) Stripped the paint off the base and used it for 25+ years until I remodeled my kitchen last year.

When I was in art school, some of the classrooms had tables that looked like this one. The college also provided personal studio space for seniors, and some studios also had tables like this. I would buy this in a NY second if you were in Massachusetts.

Same here. That top looks like legit old-school linoleum. It might be a replacement, but if so it's been there a looooong time. I'd clean off the loose paint and sand the pull-out a bit, put a glass or plexi top over the paint, and sell as a bar table paint and all! The pull-out cutting board would need to be good for cutting lemons and such, but wood is naturally antimicrobial.

Table? All I saw was the orange fur baby. Oh yeah, that table.

@say_it_slowly , your kitchen is a magazine center spread showcase!

Love the O.P.'s table as well. Don't know why, don't know how, but I like it.

Best fur baby ever! He showed up at the door years ago and never could find where he came from. Win for me!
Kind of you to say but it was just before I updated it. In reality it's not that different now, just newer. I couldn't bring myself to get rid of the enamel top table yet so it's in my basement now. I've loved it for so long!

(I do have some old platters but that one is a modern one (1980s) that was regularly used for family dinners:) My new version kitchen has glass display cabinets up at the top for some of my old stuff)

It it a kitchen table now, but judging from the materials and construction, I think this table started life elsewhere, like in an office. Top surface, towel rack, horrible paint, and protective railing look like as later additions. If it turns out that that oak was painted from the start, I would think it might have been in the medical profession.
