Definitely a grave marker. It is an older one but couldn't tell you how old. Had a similar one I listed on ebay and was contacted by a Veteran to take it down before he reported it as stolen merchandise. Urged me to turn it over to a local VFW. Don't know if there was any teeth to the threat but I did take it down.

I later gave it to a military collector for his collection since I was not sure that the local VFW wanted or had a use for it. The collector was a VFW member and he did not know what the organization would have done with it had they received it. There was no guarantee that one of them wouldn't have just taken it home. I didn't want to sell it in case it had been stolen and really didn't know what to do with it. I felt if it was in a veteran's collection, that it was in better hands and not being profited from.

Reminds me of finding this on a Voyager bus.
I found the ships website and tried returning it to a former member of the crew.....I was directed to the right person....& they never got back to me.

I tried again, but to no avail .....

    so..now it's mine.

    I know it's not a medal.....but you can't buy this in a store either...

She is an early DD converted to a DDG. She was decommissioned in '91, scrapped in '05. :( If you still want to try to return it go to military.com and you may be able to post it on the buddies page.

    I did the best I could.............see...

    Dear Sir:
Many years ago I found a black ballcap on a bus . It may have been an airport shuttle , I forget. On the cap there are three woven patches glued down almost invisibly to the front. USS LUCE in gold colored thread, the Navy crest in white , gold , and silver metallic thread, and below that DDG-38 in gold colored thread. I was the only one on the bus and it fit , so I kept it.
While I am a Canadian and not in the military , I find after reading about the Luce and your attempts to keep it's good name afloat , that the cap ( which I believe to be totally authentic to one of it's crew..) should be returned to it's rightfull place of ownership.
Should this be of interest to you I will mail it to any address you send me straightaway , without any cost to yourself .
Should this be too small a matter , or if you know the cap not to be original to the ship , I will keep it with pride in the knowledge of the stout men who served on board this US Navy fighting ship !
    Sincerely yours,

And then after getting contact info.......
    this.....

    Dear Mr Speidel:
Here are the photo's of the ballcap I talked to Tom Beane about.
I don't know how anyone can identify the cap but should someone mention it was lost on a shuttle bus at the Montreal airport.... it's theirs !
I'll hold it untill such time as you request it , or give up looking.
    Respectfully Yours,

    That's summer of 09.........I did my time.........now it's mine !

    Done deal !

I very much appreciate your written comments and efforts indeed and though not directly, this person is considered a shipmate of mine as I have served in the US Navy.
It is unfotunate that Mr. Speidel did not reply to your efforts.

This is true but few would buy them without a connection to the ship.

luce2.JPG luce3.JPG luce4.JPG Well maybe you can buy them online , but this one is is different than what they are selling.
That said , even if it's nothing , a reply would have been nice.

I have dozens of ball caps but rarely if ever wear one, & without a connection to the ship or her crew , would feel uncomfortable wearing this in public.

I once wore my Pratt & Whitney engines cap to an airshow.
I was mistaken as a jet engine tech by some of the air crew there.
I was embarassed ....& learned my lesson.

I fully agree. I'd like to think something went wrong there and it was unintentional. I was a guest aboard the USS Princeton a few years ago. Shortly thereafter I came across a very nice copy of the Princeton's newspaper from the 30s. '37 I think. This was an earlier sister. I made great efforts to copy every page and carefully pack and ship it. Never heard squat. :banghead:
But you know...I did the right thing...I think...and so be it. :)

I don't wear hats at all except if doing something to cause bits of stuff to fly about. I have a few but keeping my hair thank you. I have gone up to people who wear them to determine if they have a connection whether family, friends or were aboard. All of that's good.

    But back to the OP

    ebay prohibits selling them

There is nothing illegal about it

Once cemeteries were filled with them

They were pulled to make way for the mowers
