Hi - This is an antique bentwood chair which had a cane seat, now missing. It was in my family for over 50 years. Can you identify this for me and tell me the kind of wood and if it has any value?

Dimensions: 35” high from floor to top
Height to seat is 18 3/4”
    Seat width and depth is 15 1/2” 9CD87D03-F59C-44FE-8900-37CD0681DEC3.jpeg FD8BBBE6-31CB-421B-A7A0-1BEAD9C482A6.jpeg F00DD394-C0CA-43B4-8EB3-6FA81C0C3BCA.jpeg 5DFC6AE2-7D60-4075-B33C-374A21381914.jpeg 807C47A7-F2C1-4FA2-9590-A3442F1EBC98.jpeg 1B987F37-319A-4BC8-8C76-76DA30B75B3D.jpeg 1E84E38B-1186-4B05-A4D7-549EBA25509E.jpeg

Sadly, few wooden chairs have much value these days unless there’s something super special about them. Like, over 120 years old, in very good condition, and/or made by some famous artisan/company. Or if they’re very Mid-Century Modern.

Also, I could be wrong, but I suspect the proper term for this chair is probably “vintage” rather than “antique”, because I don’t think it’s over 100 years old. Again, I could be wrong, but I would guess it was made around 60 years ago. I’m sure someone who knows better than I do will correct me if I’m wrong… again :)

It's a Thonet model 18 chair first sold in 1876, and one of the most produced chair models in history. It could have value if an old version marked by a famous maker like Thonet or J&J Kohn. But many companies made these and millions survive, so values are quite low. Re-caning would probably cost around $200 and you'd be lucky to sell the chair for that. Most were made of beech and yours looks like beech to me.
