Another mass production or an original...

  1. Hi all!

Since I'm still learning as I go, I thought I'd check in with you guys for help (again). This is in my elderly friend's home. He passed away, and we are in the process of going through his painting collection to see what is what.

I've searched and found nothing on the "signature," if that is even one. I've also found a lot of similar scenes, all by different artists. The back is standard paper with no markings. Is it a keeper or another painting for the yardsale pile?

That also appears to be a factory painting. They're often of cliched subjects -- Paris street scene in the rain, crowded street in Hong Kong, boats at the wharf, village on the Italian coast. Another way to tell is their done with minimum effort for maximum effect. Big strokes of impasto. Featureless figures. Look at that rickshaw wheel above and imagine how quickly you could create that. The work of a minute, right?

  3. I suspected, but I wanted to be sure. I also suspect there are many factory productions in his collection. I might get lucky with one or two. Fingers crossed.
