Another box from my Anglo Indian collection.
This is a wonderful vizagapatam trinket box, unusual to find being ivory veneered and to have fretwork and to have a miniature painting inset into the top, amazing condition (for one of these) it has silvered hinges and lock plate with it's original key. Size 21cm x 11cm x 7cm

Gorgeous. That fretwork is a more southern style, which is also related to Indonesian carving and silver.

I'm not exactly sure where in India these boxes were produced but I'm just going by generic terms used, I only got that box today :) ebay find, I'm very pleased, it was in the wrong category, I still had to fight for it but had it been in the right category I wouldn't have been able to afford it.

I covet a silver and coromandel box, but they're a tad expensive. ;)

    Thats lovely.
I see those boxes here but I haven't seen one with a painting inset.
    That sets it apart.

    Hi,
When I lived near "Little India" and there were yard sales I would seen these boxes. Unfortunately they had a lot of damage like banged up corners and missing
pieces. There was one that I really could not tell if it was real ivory or plastic since I could not get close enough to tell since it was cut out so much but it was lovely. I should have bought it since everything was so cheap, I am sorry that I did not ask the price. I miss Iselin NJ so much at times.

You should have snapped them up, even broken. These boxes go for £100's. I wish I could go out there and find some but surprisingly I never see them listed in India they mainly come from the UK
