    Hello My Friends,

Firstly, wishing you all a very merry Christmas and happy holidays.

I need some help identifying working out how old this supposed antique side table is, and also the asking price?

It's got a beautiful bone and ivory inlay which is absolutely fabulous and simply gorgeous, and think it could be worth a healthy sum.

Thanks in advance for any history and advice. ho ho ho!

I agree, Hoshiarpur style, a beautiful table.
Not sure about the date, I think @808 raver can tell us more about that.:)

These are still being made with bone insets. The Bombay store was selling stuff like this. Check to see if it's ivory.

Very sort after table and I'm in no doubt it's Hoshiarpur the only thing letting it down (slightly) is the relatively plain legs but in it's favour, there are no losses to the inlay on the top. As for date, around 1930's but could be as early as 1915 and as late as 1947. As for price? it depends on where you are selling, these are in a very specialised field ie it could go for a song in a local auction, even on ebay not listing it correctly could see it dive, if you aren't in a rush then list it for a buy it now price for around £300-£500, this is a better (when made) table https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-...765125?hash=item34159ac9c5:g:YrEAAOSwR-9dn8mP
I would list it both in vintage chess and in Indian.
It's mad that I've been tagged in this when I've just converted a large Hoshiarpur box into a chess piece box for a 1820's bone set.

I have a similar table without the game board in the centre. Unfortunately, it has a lot of losses of the bone inserts (not high quality stuff!). We never thought it particularly valuable, as it was “cheap” Indian import when purchased—1930s or 40s maybe? I have a 3-tiered cake tray in better condition. I’ll try to get a photo later. We always considered this stuff decorative rather than a collector piece.

This is the chess board and fitted interior I made for a F H Ayres chess pieces, board is made from Macassar ebony and boxwood with purple heart and oak and the interior is made from Macassar ebony and oak, the queens are under the kings and the kings stand 4 1/2" high. I am yet to finish the French polishing on the interior because I need time for the shellac to dissolve in the methylated spirits as I ran out. 80506633_586229758608138_8208442243715956736_n.jpg

Hi Kent, yes this stuff is very collectable and if you had the same stuff from the 18th c then you might marvel at the prices it would fetch.

It would seem, from the chess pieces, that I'm a master chess player but in reality I'm not that good at all. My Son and I play quite a lot but that's the only time I play so knowing who made the pieces is well beyond me, and yes the Dutch museum was the place to go when finding out who made them but not the date it seems ;) I will post a better pic when done but the whole story of making the fitted interior is thus, I saw these pieces on sale on ebay from the US and thought they maybe ivory as to their whiteness (no visible black dots) and the price was good even for a bone set so I bought them. The seller sent them in a tin without any padding so by the time they arrived they were smashed to bits :( I was angry to say the least but the seller didn't hesitate in giving me a full refund but the seller didn't want to pay the return postage and said I should keep them (I'd also paid import tax) Anyway I then spent a day drilling tiny holes and gluing metal pegs into the breaks and by the end of the day you could hardly tell they had been broken at all :) I'm sure they would be fine rattling around in a box now but I thought they deserved a place where they would stay intact for the next 200 years and I'm not short of nice boxes for them to go in :) I will take detailed photos of both the set and the box when I'm happy but the whole lot (including the box as I also restored that) cost me less than £100. I'm sure if I were to list them as a package board, box, and set, they would do quite well.

I am sure you did a wonderful job, you are used to finnicky stuff with bone etc by now.
    I'm also sure they would.
