    Hello,

Was wondering what type of pipe this is?

    Also, if he is a prominent person possibly? IMG_7352.JPG IMG_7355.JPG IMG_7353.JPG IMG_7356.JPG

Just found this one at the flea-market this weekend!

    Any help would be appreciated!

There may be an official name for the pipe, but I don't know what it is. I've just always called them German Porcelain pipes.

Funny thing is though, I feel like I've seen her before? I don't know why.

Her face does look somewhat familiar for some reason or another.

What's with the dark hair(?) (looks like finger curls) falling from the crown of her head and sides of her head? Her hair in the front of her head is snow white and smooth. Maybe those "dark things" are part of a hat(?) she's wearing.

    Some kind of "snood?"

I can't tell if those are ruffles on the sides of her cap/hat, or whether she is wearing a hairpiece that doesn't match the rest of her hair. I suspect it's ruffles. The image is not clear enough to see.

And, neither one of them looks even a little bit familiar to me!

Whoa doggies, DH knew stuff about the pipe -- he says:

"You put wine in the bowl and that cools the smoke and gives it a flavor." He thinks the stem of the pipe was traditionally made of a specific wood (without looking it up he thinks it was either cherry or birch) and he thinks those pipes were predominantly southern Germany.

I'm wondering if she's his mother? She definitely looks older to me than he does.

She reminds me a bit of Carrie Nation.

She's definitely at least one generation (if not two) older than the male. Grandmother, oldest aunt, great-aunt????

She is wearing a daycap of the mid 1800s. Daycaps covered the top and back of the head with ties down the front. They hung free as evident by the untied ribbons down her front. These caps were worn in the house.

"Earlier in the decade daycaps were worn by young and old, but later in the decade only by older women."

I think the couple are of the same generation. Her face looks weird and older because she is probably "gumming" it - teeth gone and she flatly refused to wear Washington's wooden ones. Her eyes look weird probably because the focus on them is not sharp. This may be because they were were moving- blinking, the pupils are of a light color or the fading from wear and age of the CDV. They both have white hair.

BTW, found a couple of references to the photographer M.W. Newcomb of Marysville, Kansas in the 1860s. The same person or another photographer with the same name was taking pics of circus performers in Salt Lake City in the 1880s. The 1884 SLC City Directory has listed a photographer M.W. Newcomb residing in that city. In 1883 a M.W. Newcomb filed a patent application for a "Photographic Plate Holder." Okay, found the patent for the Photographic Plate Holder. It was issued to a M.W. Newcomb of Marysville, Kansas on August 7, 1883. With the 1884 SLC City Directory listing him, it means M.W. Newcomb grabbed the patent and quickly moved on to SLC orrr they are not the same person.

PS. Washington wearing wooden dentures is as much a myth as him chopping down the cherry tree. Washington like most at that time did have dental problems, but he had multiple sets of dentures of a variety of materials—including ivory, gold, and lead.

Thank you for the info on the hat & The Photographer! I couldn't find much on him, so it's been a great help! Thank you as always! :)

Short of taxidermy there is no way to make a corpse stand up straight like that.
